Weekly Leadership Lifter

September 12, 2022

I read a great quote this week from Warren Buffet. He said, “The one easy way to become worth 50 percent more than you are now—at least—is to hone your communication skills—both written and verbal.” He said that his Dale Carnegie public speaking certificate is worth more to him than his college degree.

Having strong communication skills is paramount to being a good leader. Think about it—your communication affects all areas of your life. Whether you’re parenting toddlers, leading a softball team, or giving a presentation to your college class, your communication plays an important role in reaching your goals. In business, every transaction that happens is a result of communication.

In 2016, LinkedIn conducted a survey with employers looking to hire, and they said the number one soft skill they were looking for wasn’t creativity, critical thinking, or even being a team player. It was communication!

"The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives."
— Tony Robbins

The Bible talks a lot about communication as well:

"Colossians 4:6 “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”

"Ephesians 4:29 “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”

I encourage you to take responsibility for improving your communications skills today. It’s been said that only 1 out of 5 CEOs or managers care about the personal development of their employees and teams. So, don’t wait on someone else to help you. Find a podcast, read a book, or enroll in a class. Make the decision to level up your communication today and watch your leadership expand!

Here’s are a few areas you might examine in your communication with others to see if you need improve:

  1. Listening.
  2. Conciseness in language.
  3. Body language.
  4. Speaking with confidence.
  5. Showing respect.
  6. Open-mindedness.
  7. Using the correct mediums.
  8. Positivity in tone.
